Seattle Green Map Project

Green MapThanks to the wonders of technology, cartography and a multitude of volunteers, Seattle residents have access to an online interactive map created to help residents and visitors of Seattle become more conscious of the “green” around them.

Since 2002, volunteers for the Seattle Green Map Project have been plotting places where folks can find sustainable culture and design, economic development, information, access to renewable resources, green space, and transportation options. The interactive map lets users filter by neighborhood (say Phinney Ridge, for example) and variable (economic development) to help them find the sustainable resources they need closest to them (organic produce store).

The Seattle Green Map Project is a spin off of Wendy Brawer’s 1992 New York City project, according to the Project’s website. When she came to visit Seattle in 2002,a group of Seattle residents were so excited about her presentation that they decided to create their own, and in 2004 the Seattle Green Map Project began.

The online version is up in draft form, and a print version ready for city-wide distribution should be ready soon, states the Project’s organizers. Using the online interactive map can take a few extra minutes because you might have to download some free viewing tools first, but the extra time is well worth it. Once uploaded, you can use the tools to find nature areas, community centers, or even pollution zones in your neighborhood.

In addition, you can search using relative 2000 Census data to find out information like what percentage of Seattleites drove to work alone or carpooled, or what percentage of Seattleites live where.
